Carshalton is located in the valley of the River Wandle and forms part of the London Borough of Sutton in south London
The village was situated within the Anglo-Saxon administrative division of Wallington hundred and before the Norman Conquest it is documented that there were five manors in the area owned by five freemen.
Carshalton is documented as 'Aultone' in the Domesday Book.
The name 'Carshalton' is composed of the words Cars, Aul and ton, with 'Aul' meaning a spring or a well, and 'ton' meaning homestead or farm. 'Cars' may have derived from early spellings 'Kersaulton' and 'Cresaulton' indicating a cross or maybe cress, as watercress was a local product.
Carshalton was known for its lavender fields in the Victorian era.
